Battambang Provincial Hall: An Architectural and Cultural Heritage

The Lord's House was built in 1905 in French colonial style. It was the residence of Katathon Chhum Aphaiwong, the last Siamese governor of Battambang. In 1907, Battambang was returned to Cambodia under French colonial administration. The house was then used as the Provincial Hall and became a symbol of administrative power. Today, it has been transformed into the Battambang History Museum, displaying important artifacts and documents. Visitors from both Cambodia and abroad never miss the chance to see this historic house.

In Battambang province, there is a historic building known as the "Provincial Hall," a work
of architecture from the French colonial era. This building features a beautiful, bright yellow color with elegant design elements like arched windows, rows of columns, and a classic red roof. One day, I visited there with friends, and we took pictures in front of this building to preserve the memory of our cultural experience. This place is not only beautiful but also one that showcases the identity and history of Khmer society. Battambang Provincial Hall is not an ordinary building. It is an architectural masterpiece that reflects the era of the protectorate and the prosperity of society in the past. Visiting there opened my mind to understanding the value of preserving our cultural heritage.

there is an exhibition of many Khmer musical instruments, which have been preserved from previous generations. These artifacts reflect the creativity and traditional artistry of the Khmer people, carefully safeguarded to educate and inspire future generations.

This place, featuring a grand display of an oversized chapey dang veng mounted on a golden pedestal and surrounded by historical portraits on the walls, is a spot that most visitors simply cannot pass by without taking a photo. The chapey dang veng is not merely a musical instrument—it is a symbol of Khmer culture, reflecting national identity and traditional artistry. Visitors who come to this museum or cultural center often choose to take pictures with it as a keepsake of their experience and to honor the rich heritage it represents.

In this section, portraits of Cambodia's Prime Ministers from one generation to the next are carefully arranged. This place is one that most Cambodians find hard to pass by without stopping. Reading the names of each Prime Minister, one by one, helps us learn about the leaders of past eras and remember those who once governed our nation. Taking time to read with attention from one portrait to the next becomes a meaningful way to connect with our country's history.

To preserve the photographs in their original condition and protect them from external damage, earlier images have been carefully arranged inside display cabinets. Each photograph reflects Cambodia's development and the living context of its people. Some of these images are ones that today's younger generation has never seen before. That makes them true historical artifacts, existing for many decades and carrying priceless value. They are being diligently maintained so they can last far into the future.

Especially when we want to understand the history here more deeply, there are people who come to share and explain the stories. Listening to the history of this place, which in the past was commonly called "the Lord's House," is truly fascinating for visitors of all ages. In particular, tourists never miss the chance to explore it. The story of this house is strongly connected with Battambang province, and it has stood for many years as part of our heritage.
